My laptop is Lenovo R61 with Nvidia NVS 140 discrete graphics.
This failure does not happen every time too, but I can say that almost always
when I suspend laptop with any Openoffice application or Java based application

I used the method mentioned earlier as the problem still exists in the
release version of Karmic.
sudo rm /etc/fonts/conf.d/10*
sudo dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig
Everything looks much better so far but I haven't tested all my
applications yet. This is a serious bug that needs to be addressed as
@Ralf Ebert: I also agree with an option for the Fn keys but I disagree
to have the default as in OS-X. I think initiating the Applications menu
by pressing fn + alt + F1 is quite a finger excercise :-)

Thanks brother. Found a thread that worked. All sweet now. The output
volume was defaulted on mute after I upgraded to 9.10 (why the hell would it
be?) One click and I was away. Loving this Ubuntu after a couple of weeks.
Haven't bothered to touch my new netbook, with XP.
