I encountered this bug also, with a fresh install of karmic (UNR), vpnc,
and network-manager-vpnc .My company's vpn requires that I enter a
passcode from an RSA SecurID token, but I did not ever get prompted for
such.
I did find the following workaround:
- NetworkManager \ VPN Connections \
After switching to the console as described above, I did not see the
expected Linux console, however I saw the scrambled picture of my
desktop. After switching back everything is fine again.

related to compiz desktop effects it occurs also when enabling composite

http://www.sharpfonts.com/ and renaming /etc/fonts/local.conf to

The daemon does not responds and its CPU load goes to 40/60% .
