This is normal behavior, because when you use synaptic as root ( via
sudo or otherwise ) it uses the graphical settings from root's home
directory instead of the ones from your home directory.

Same her on Lucid 10.04 LTS. Maybe this is all related to improper
handling updates of available services. My recent report (Bug #586229)

It's likely a problem with your window manager or its focus-stealing

I had the same problem with package amarok 2:2.3.0-0ubuntu4 (Ubuntu
10.04, 64bit). Updating to amarok 2:2.3.1-1ubuntu1~lucid1~ppa2 by
adding the ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports repository seems to have fixed

For what it's worth: I've got similar random crashed on my laptop (have
had it for a while.) From this bug report responses I got the idea to
try the -rt kernel (2.6.31-10-rt #153-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT RT Tue Jan 12
