This happens EVERY time syncdaemon runs now. It's getting hung on
something, perhaps, but either way, it's leaking like a sieve and
chewing up enormous amounts of ram... I've let it get as high as 3GB out

Seconded - same issue for me, inconsistent detection of sound card.
AMD64, Realtek ALC883 card, Ubuntu 10.04 upgraded thru Update Manager yesterday.
Also, not sure if this is relevant but I can predict when there will be
problems as the volume mixer fails to appear in the Panel on boot.

Fixed in r9708 of the trunk.
The connector context was asserting that paths marked with connector attributes
were always open. Now it just treats them as
connectors for editing purposes if they are open, or normal objects otherwise.

As I stated in the initial bug report it is the upstream kernel
(2.6.35-12) from the Kernel Team PPA that fixes my issue.

This is still a problem and definitely hangs every third suspend action.
I have not tried installing the upstream kernel for two reasons: 1. I
don't want to break my system; 2. I have not had time to do this.
