This issue still exists in the current Ubuntu version; when plugging in
a USB head set the volume in alsamixer is at zero. Note that the volume
can NOT be increased through any GUI panel, the only way to use the head
set is to open a terminal, type alsamixer and then hit the F6 function
key,
