Xrandr also works for me, in my case I did:
xrandr --output HDMI1 --left-of LVDS1
So, to me it appears to be the gnome-display-properties program that is
broken, since xrandr works w/no problems.

As mentioned in the previous comment, the suggestion was that the bug
was known and fixed in Thunderbird 3 tree.
Now that Thunderbird 3 (Lucid) has replaced Thunderbird 2 (Karmic) in
main Ubuntu release, there seems little point in keeping this bug
active.

Yea i would agree with Justin Up there I have an onboard graphics
card only i m testing it out by purchasing a graphics card and
checking if the problem disappears. because the ram is prolly bein
eaten away to comp for graphics makes kinda sense... i ahve tried
updating my kernels
