Also have this problem on a samsung r530. Did compile the 2.6.39.4
kernel, but the problem still is there. Interupts every minute or so,
ubuntu 11.04 is unusable this way. Before that I did run a 32 bit
version and didnt suffer this problem. Maybe it is a 64 bit problem?

I think the behaviour for this has changed in Ubuntu 10.10, so that
volume up pushes the volume up from 0 instead. On the other hand, it
sounds like your mute button isn't registering a keypress when the
volume is muted, hence not allowing you to unmute it.

Same problem on Lucid server but I think I caused it

Gave Scott's PPA a try - unfortunately I still see the same behaviour -
windows such as Firefox, VLC media player, Nautilus, gedit, etc. still
have the same problem.
The one difference I did notice is that after applying the PPA, the
minimize and maximize (or switch windows with ALT+TAB) trick
