and
/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/security/pam_shells.so does exist

I succeeded in finding a workaround for Gnone Shell being displayed
correctly. Caution: this describe what I remember I did, and I did not
reproduce it.
Basically, I tried to follow the steps presented here:

I finally fixed my problem on WUBI and separate 11.10 install partition by
adding kernel options to GRUB, ie.
acpi=off noapic nomodeset
Apparently my rig suffers from a regression on ACPI handling and the ATI
Radeon Express 200 motherboard video, especially in the Linux Kernel 3.x
strain.

[panel] F10 shortcut with dual screens shows menus on both screens
Followup to the earlier report. When I am experiencing this problem, the
other dash items, Media Apps, Internet Apps and More Apps are
unresponsive. Clicking them makes them flash, but nothing new is
displayed.
