Another example of why you might want 32-bit libraries is that I want to
build wine with GL support, but when I try to install the libglu1-mesa-
dev:i386 library (from xorg-edgers), apt-get wants to remove over 20
amd64 packages, and I'm not sure how badly it might break my system to

The problem is not in dpkg. The association between links and
applications has changed several times in GNOME. There's no point to
keep this old report open. Use your GNOME settings to pick the default
browser. Those alternatives are almost useless.
