I am on Debian Wheezy (kernel 3.10-3), and have the same problem with my
Logitech Unifying

So here is what happened : To test if an old bug with menus is still
present in Trusty I updated to it, but it went very wrong (no screen at
all, I filed this bug by going to recovery mode and FailsafeX). So I
tried installing Trusty from scratch, but I kept my /home. I
I had the same issue with an HP 655.
the oem-wireless-rt2x00-1044172 package is part of the HP OEM installation
(12.04.2), this explains why it is there even if the user ddn't install it.
I have solved the problem by installing regular ubuntu 12.04.3 with the
linux-current-generic kernel.

I fixed this
1) I ran kubuntu in option Try Ubuntu and installed grub-efi-amd64-signed
package.
2) Then I installed Kubuntu and update the last version of packages during
installion.
I understood what happened : As I had to start X (startx) on my session
previously, my .XAutority file was owned by root not myself. I
understood that after reinstalling 13.10. So I removed .XAutority and it
worked. But I think there should be an error message as there was
previously in GDM

Thanks, that sounds clear. I gave up on trying to do things that way
and went for a fully LUKS encrypted disc, (well except for a small stub
that acts as the initial bootloader and /boot on /dev/sda1) and I run
Windoze using VirtualBox. It's not perfect but I think it's pretty
secure, certainly
I investigated this bug today and discovered two things.
If i boot with Kernel 3.8.0-35 (latest raring Kernel) I do not encounter this
bug.
For Saucy I found a workaround and some kind of a fix.
Workaround:
I can enable bluetooth from a shell using sudo rfkill unblock bluetooth
This bug can easily trigger data corruption and lost:
1. Computer A has the file, computer B doesn't.
2. User performs a clean install of Ubuntu in computer A, deleting all his
files because he thinks there's a copy on the cloud.
3. Computer A hasn't the file, computer B hasn't the file either.
