trying to install a particular package. Please execute the following
command, as it will clear your package cache, in a terminal:
sudo apt-get clean

To minimize the size, I uninstalled the linux-image-extra-* and linux-firmware

removing all compilation cache and recompiling worked. Probably

I failed to mention that I also had linux-image-extra-3.19.0-26-generic
and linux-headers-3.19.0-26 from vivid-proposed, but it is probably not
relevant:

I tested linux-image-3.19.0-26-generic from vivid-proposed and it works
as expected. I can't reproduce the kernel crashes with it.
Now, I'd love to see a version available for trusty (in trusty-
proposed?) as well, as linux-generic-lts-vivid.

Ah, you are correct. Sorry.
What I was supposed to say is that we don't activate context like that
anymore. The Preferred flag should be used instead. So in your case, use
/usr/share/ofono/scripts/set-context-property ril_0 1 Preferred 1
This will trigger NetworkManager to activate the context
Note that apart from the colour, the designs of the icons used for the two
states of the indicator (no new message / new message) are different since the
last update: outline / solid envelope.
This might help to differentiate the two states.
