Regarding the Bose Quiet Comfort ... those are noise cancelling headphones, it
is no surprise to me that those cancel the hiss.

it should only simulate the commands, not actually execute them. But the
final check on the output.pdf seems to be unconditionally called, even
if -n is used. That's why you get an error.

I am not sure what's with this "SQUASHFS error" problem. Here's my experience

Parentheses appear as expected in Ubuntu 16.04 but fail to appear in the
latex math environment in Ubuntu 17.04. "$y=f(x)$" in the tex file
should produce output that has parentheses around the x, but does not.

On 17.04, even the workaround that Ewan posted in #5 above doesn't work
for me. If I add DefaultLimitNOFILE=4 to /etc/systemd/user.conf and
log out and log in again, prlimit still shows this:
adam:~$ prlimit
RESOURCE DESCRIPTION SOFT HARD UNITS
...
NOFILE
