Frequent Kernel panic in 5.4.0-40 but not 5.4.0-29 on Gemini Lake cpu

Things I also tried:
* Disabled onboard LAN (r8169) and used a PCIe---(adapter)--->PCI--->Linksys
10/100 NIC (tulip driver).
* Disabled all CPU/Chipset features in the BIOS, all APCI/power savings, sleep
states, turbo, etc.
(Still crashed).

Still happens on a clean XFCE install on Ubuntu 18.04, exactly like in

Changing themes fixed this for me on Ubuntu 17.04, as per #3 above
(Settings->Appearance->Styles).
Radiance/Ambiance themes: high cpu usage.
All others: no problem.
Other suggestions did not work for me:

Same symptoms on ubuntu (no x) raring under LXDE/openbox, also Galaxy

Having just spent 2 hours trying to get my apache working again (because
of this issue) in 9.10 (and yes I tried but failed to find an existing
bug until I tried to report it, having figured it out) - I question
whether it is indeed invalid.
I agree that it should probably be a php5 bug rather

I seem to have the exact same issue but removing ~/.pulse/ did not solve
it (it also gets recreated rather quickly). I blew it away, logged out,
rebooted, repeated, etc. Tried all of this as root, as my user, etc.
However, it appears as if I have OSS working. Using audacious2 I can
select OSS
