Performing a fresh install. I installed from a CD containing XP SP2, then
applied SP3, then applied all updates via Windows Update.

This was not the only bug affecting the system and had it been any other
machine I probably could have lived with them to find a solution.
As with any machine that gets used for development and experimentation there
comes a time where a fresh start is probably the best solution - and this was

After installing from the Karmic CD the problem remains as in Intrepid.
I installed the ati drivers from the PPA.
It appears that the ATI driver is not used and Xserver falls back to the VESA
driver.
(Rebooting in this mode does not exhibit the problem, though I've no idea
whether it works in

I can't reproduce on my home system which is upgraded to 9.04.

I have four virtual machines, if I select one in virtual manager and choose
Shutdown - Force off then it kills that domain - it also kills the next one
in the list according to id.

This was previously reported as a bug in version 2.0.2 with Edgy and apparently
(from the bug report) a fix was released.
I'm experiencing this with Anjuta
I was given a pointer to the Ubuntu Policy Manual, in section 9.3.2 it
says
In Ubuntu, /var/run is mounted as a temporary filesystem, so the init.d
scripts must handle this correctly. This will typically amount to
creating any required subdirectories of /var/run dynamically when the
init.d script
NFS mounted home here as well, exhibits same problem.

When using compiz as widow manager the drop-down selection list from the
gnome-drawer is hidden behind other windows on the desktop and cannot be
brought forward.
The problem does not occur when using Metacity as window
I notice that if I have Show position of pointer when the Control key is
pressed selected (in System-Preferences-Mouse), then the Ctrl+Alt+L key
combination is ignored.
If unselected, the key combination works as expected.
