That was because I was using fglrx which doesn't support my Radeon HD
4650. After I removed fglrx and started using the xorg radeon driver

1) Download and install Skype 4.0.0.8-1 from www.skype.com
2) Install Remmina desktop client using Synaptic
3) Start skype, notification icon appears on the top panel.
4) Start Remmina
Expected result: both Remmina notification icon and Skype icon appear

I run unity which has a horizontal panel on the top of the screen. The panel
has an area for notifications. I don't know if it is ystray icon or unity
styled indicator, I guess it is what comes by default when you install a new
system because I have this problem on multiple computers.

I have downloaded Skype 4.0 from skype web site, not installed it from
repository because repository contains old version of Skype. I assume that by
default Skype is using systray for displaying messages. I don't have any
unity-skype integration packages installed. I don't understand
I am using Skype 4.0.0.8 for Linux

After running update-manager I have noticed that FireFox started
crashing permanently. I had to disable Global Menu Bar Integration
plugin to be able to use firefox.

is shown properly. Then after some time the icon disappears from the
