I have a similar issue on an HP Mini 110. The screen does not dim upon
switching to battery power and vice-versa. The suggestion above
(acpt_backlight=vendor) makes the screen dim when cold booting on
battery power, but still the power manager does not change the
brightness when going from battery
I forgot to add that the brightness keys do work on the Mini, however
there is no on-screen notification other then the brightness changing.

I have a Dell Latitude D400 as well.
Initial Linux installation was Linux Mint 7 (Gloria) (~ Ubuntu 9.04 /
Jaunty). Suspend/ Resume worked flawlessly.
Upgraded to Linux Mint 8 (Helena) (~ Ubuntu 9.10 / Karmic).
Fn-Suspend no longer works, even after re-adding key sequence to enable
it.
...add me to the list for this bug, as well. Dell Latitude D400 with
built-in i855 graphics. Running Linux Mint 8 (Helena), which is
essentially Ubuntu 9.10 / Karmic with a few bells whistles tacked on.
I will try the kernel boot parameter when I get home tonight, and report
back here if it

Public bug reported:
I upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 beta yesterday and sound is not working. I
ran System Test and the audio test failed and it led me here. This could
be similar to bugs #439122 and #437198. What is different in my case is
that I'm running under VMware. However, audio was working
What Ubuntu version are you using?
Did this happen with older versions?

Also, try this:
run gconf-editor from terminal and set
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/bell_mode
to 'off' rather than 'on'

remove it from this category.
