I have a similar issue on an HP Mini 110. The screen does not dim upon switching to battery power and vice-versa. The suggestion above (acpt_backlight=vendor) makes the screen dim when cold booting on battery power, but still the power manager does not change the brightness when going from battery

I have a Dell Latitude D400 as well. Initial Linux installation was Linux Mint 7 (Gloria) (~ Ubuntu 9.04 / Jaunty). Suspend/ Resume worked flawlessly. Upgraded to Linux Mint 8 (Helena) (~ Ubuntu 9.10 / Karmic). Fn-Suspend no longer works, even after re-adding key sequence to enable it.
