Since 8.04 ubuntu includes the SCSI emulation on its kernel. This
provokes kernel panic when copying data from one IDE port to another.
The message is Kernel Panic not syncing: Attempted to kill the idle

I'm having the same issue.

I guess the SCSI emulation causes the kernel panic (both IDE ports works
perfect with kernels not emulating SCSI (Debian 4.0) (Ubuntu 7.10
Gutsy), but fails with Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10.
Please set some kind of patch that make possible
I finally fix it... you won't believe it, the problem was the IDE Ultra
ATA 80 Cable, it was damaged I think.
First i used a 40 wires cable, but the freezes continued, so I bought
today a new 80 wires cable, and everything works beautifully.
Thanks to everybody. I hope that anyone having this
