I believe the installer should catch I/O exceptions and report that the media
is broken, instead of a generic crash handler message.

After installing fglrx you need to configure X to use the fglrx ATi
driver:
$ sudo aticonfig --initial
and restart X. (I guess Ubuntu's restricted hardware tool does the same)
It is odd that you still get the error using the open source drivers. At least
the vesa driver does currently work
with the latest updates fglrx kernel modules compile fine now (unlike
before)

(2:8.780-0) and use that driver since it now compiles against the kernel

Actually above was only half the solution, but almost there.
In fact, the zero_cd trick does not work reliably. Now, with some testing I am
confident to say that
the virtual cd-rom device needs to get ejected for the GSM modem to become
active.
OK now, there is no doubt now - in the manual partitioning mode, If
there is a (dead) symlink named 'opt' onte partition that is supposed to
be the root partition of the new installations, ubuquitty fails with the
errors in the last comment.
I remoded the link and installation went just fine.

I am afraid I do not have spare time to patch my kernel and recompile
I'd like to add that I did a fresh reinstall of Jaunty and the original
problem reported (MC950D unusable when inserted before boot-up) is no
longer valid.
However it did not automatically eject the pseudo-CDROM so attached
I can reproduce this behaviour on fresh Jaunty installs on two machines, i386
and amd64 platforms, with the Novatel MC950D USB modem. I assume the problem
must be very similar because the symptoms described match the ones I see
perfectly.
Modem works with wvdial and gnome-ppp, too.

Attached LCD supports 1024x768 but on the first X startup X runs on a

When inserting a music CD that is not cached in the local database the
lookup of disc details (artist, album and track names etc) fails.
When I try with sound-juicer the lookup succeeds.
When I repeat with rhythmbox it seems to use the

tsclient may block the entire X Desktop when launching the tightvnc
client application.
1. start tsclient
2. select the vnc protocol
3. make sure the host name drop-down list has some entries
4. click the host name input field and type in the

I get this error, too, when capplets-data gets configured:

This still affects up-to-date Intreprid i386/Desktop. Please reopen
I have a Matrox G200 card. X comes up fine on first X startup when booting,
ending up at a screen resolution
of 1024x768 (that is ok). However when logging out/restarting the X server I
end up in what I believe is called
Confirming the issue and confirming that installing

fixes all my problems.

I'd claim this is clearly a showstopper and wonder why priority is still only

or to create a new one. then it should work

Alpha 6 AMD64 Desktop install CD
With only one SATA drive I did not experience this problem. It detected
the Hardy install.

There is only one SATA hard drive connected on my sytem, and it contains an
8.04 installation.
grub-install did not write an entry for it into grub's menu.lst file.
