I can reproduce this behaviour on fresh Jaunty installs on two machines, i386 and amd64 platforms, with the Novatel MC950D USB modem. I assume the problem must be very similar because the symptoms described match the ones I see perfectly. Modem works with wvdial and gnome-ppp, too. Odd enough,
