Beste Gerard,
For as far as I am aware the problem this thread is about only occurred for
10.04 and 10.10, not 9.10. So whatever problem you had may or may not be the
problem at hand.
Having said that, the resolution to the problem at hand was a fix to 10.04, not
10.04 by itself.

Binary package hint: cups
Xubuntu Lucid + Nautilus + Gedit
See the attached screenshot.
Before the latest cups update (1.4.3) I had the Local Printers 4th entry (HP
LaserJet 3020 USB 00CNBF091211 HPLIP (HP LaserJet 3020)) selected. Printing and
scanning (xsane) was ok.

It looks like most (all but you?) people after switching off the Assistive
Technologies no longer experience the slowdown. In other words, your problem
may be something completely different. I would recommend opening a new bug.

Nautilus is very slow in list
Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: firefox
Xubuntu 10.04 + Nautilus + Gedit
Firefox since its 3.6.6 version renders the fonts less than sharply.
I know less than optimal font rendering has been reported before, but this time
things are clearly related to the 3.6.6 version - with 3.6.4

Subsequent Nautilus starts (from this or another user) are immediate.
Actually I am not sure Nautilus is the culprit here: When rebooting from
a session with only a Terminal window (or no window at all) the
wallpaper kludge also happens after 35 (10 +25) seconds.
I had a look at Applications
