This is caused by an application (xcb) adding UTF8_STRING typed cut buffer
properties. Emacs attempts
to rotate such properties and fails.

In emacs, I selected a small chunk of text using the keyboard and then typed:

Attached are diffs based on the approach of reverting debian/control to one
which doesn't
rely on a post 7.0 version of debhelper. Perhaps this is the right approach?

PREFIX=/usr/local.
It was built with PREFIX=/usr/local because the debian/rules file uses
