This can be closed - I believe the next kernel update fixed it, though
it has been a while, so I'm not positive about that. In any event, it no
longer happens.

Starting anything from the menu fails and kills the panel. This also

Rhythmbox updated earlier today in the Karmic Alpha. Crashed without
warning about after roughly 1 hour of use.

Checking in Synaptic shows a suggested for install file: python-

I will install this file and see if this clears up the problem.

I just received the 2.6.30-6 kernel update - first boot to a blank
screen, no way to recover, forced into hard reset. Second boot logged in
normally, but immediately received the bug again.

This time it was a no-boot situation. Twice in a row, the screen would
freeze before getting to the log in screen.
On the third try, I went into Recovery mode, ran apt-get update and apt-
get upgrade to no apparent effect. I then ran startx, which did get me

It has happened 2x in a row. I opened RhythmBox to see if my sound was
back, and had opened FireFox 3.10 and Thunderbird 2.0.0.21. I'll reboot
again and not open anything at all to see if it's being triggered by
these apps.

The only other thing open at the time was a Bash shell, which was not in
use.
There were no effects other than the bug report window opening. I'm
still in the same session and it is stable.
