I was able to run the ubuntu-drivers install command without problems on
a liveusb (kubuntu 20.04, the same as my system). There seems to be
something wrong with my installation. I'm sorry for posting this as a
bug.

When joining lines, if the last line of the edit buffer is an empty line
and that line is part of the selection gEdit will become unresponsive
immediately on pressing ctrl-J to join the lines. Empty lines otherwise
