It happens to me too on a freshly installed Oneiric (AMD64).
The problem manifests itself quite consistently when I open terminal,
but yesterday it happened a couple of times with Chrome too. I'm sure
sometimes it doesn't do it because I was able to select Keep in
launcher for the terminal. When
And terminal doesn't show up in the ALT-TAB selector either (see

It looks like the application doesn't exist for certain aspects of the
GUI: when it's like that, I can't even move the window by dragging the
title bar, I have to give focus to the main window by clicking on
The Aubergine package did the trick for me too, I use Maverick x86_64
and Microsoft Wired Keyboard 600.

@p4man: thanks for the clarification. I'd love to help, but I'm not sure
how. As I said above I ran SeaTools for Windows' Long Generic Test and
it didn't report any problems (you can find the log file in my previous

got the the same results.
I ran SeaTools for Windows' Long Generic test' to confirm that the drive
was OK and it passed the test (see attached log file) so I

tried connecting a different monitor (Samsung SyncMaster 226BW) with the
same results, therefore the problem must lie somewhere else (probably
the nvidia driver).

I tried connecting the laptop to a different monitor (Samsung SyncMaster
226BW), nothing changed, so I guess it doesn't depend on the VGA/monitor
combination (not that I really believed that the monitor had anything to
do with it, not I'm sure it doesn't).
I removed brand and model of the monitor
