The card worked just fine for me until I installed Precise. Then it
shows up in lspci but no errors really in dmesg. But in disk utility it
doesn't show up and it doesn't mount obviously.

Well I will try your instructions. But when I said that the upstream
kernel failed to boot, I just had the system freeze at the blank purple
screen after making grub selection. This is even with disabling the
splash stuff in /etc/grub/default.
There is one new problem though. I have returned the
@jsalisbury but the upstream kernel did not boot even with the drive
out. So we are not sure the bug exists upstream do we? if it booted
normally and then didn't because the drive was plugged in then I can see
why.

I wouldn't know hey! It was a wild guess and that solved the problem!
its quite scary when your wubi install goes boom though. I prefer if a
normal install does that. its just easy to reinstall grub and continue.
this one gets a little freaky!!

Managed to manually boot using linux=/boot/vmlinuz... root=/dev/sda4
loop=/ubuntu/root.disk
