I recently discovered a failing RAM stick that was causing random
crashes. I don't know if this was faulty at the time of the original
crash, but I have reinstalled / as there were a number of dependency
problems. Running OK now. Thanks for your time.

about closing down applications, which I began to do (FF, TB+Enigmail)
when x crashed to a text screen. I had to do a hard reboot - into low
graphics mode. Graphics is OK when using previous kernel.

After a restart I discovered that the Nvidia driver HAD been installed
despite the process seeming to crash and Compiz is now running.
