This solved my problem, Thanks a lot!
But shouldn't this be done automatically by the post / pre install
scripts ?
This happens at two of my servers after unattended upgrade. After the
last Samba Security release.
so I think security updates shouldnt bring a server in a fault state ...

final,
all of them have same problem for me.
decrease works fine
increasing didn't
actual in Maverick this happens
I decrease brightens to lowest level
then push brightness button, brightness and brightness level
without any fixes installed, ...
i seems that NOT the ac_adapter/ADP1/state is wrog,
instead battery/BAT0/state is wrong when discharging see below.
*ac_adaptor is _pluged_ while Battery is fully
charged*
/proc/acpi/ac_adapter/ADP1$ cat state
state: on-line
cat
with or without the script i get this results
if AC_Adaptor is pluged
r...@laptop:/etc/acpi# hal-get-property --udi `hal-find-by-capability

inspired by last mesage i have a look at /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state
and for me it looks like this is set wrong while ac_adapter state is still
working correct
