In case you don't want to wait for aruiz's loader to be packaged in Debian (and
then trickled down to Ubuntu), here's a PPA:

No, no. You can't just hash comment mid-quote. Do something like this:
68 for word in $GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT; do
69 if [ $word = splash ]; then
70 #GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=$GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT vt.handoff=7
71 GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=$GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT
Disabling vt.handoff in /etc/grub.d/10_linux fixes this for me.

I really can't remember if I had been resuming from suspend. I do
remember it's not strictly idling as in I-have-been-staring-at-my-
computer-for-an-hour: I was reading a maximised window of Evolution on
Workspace 3, there was no scrolling, and there was no user input for a
while.

I followed the instructions to obtain a backtrace. The crash in
evolution is now not reproducible. Instead the same steps now cause a
crash in desktopcouch-service. I've filed the bug 650960, which is
marked as duplicate of bug 640305.
Please close this bug. Thank you!
