As a core package, the apt package doesn't get uninstalled like that.
Could you add /var/log/dpkg.log as an attachment?
Furthermore, if you wonder how to reinstall your apt package, you could
download the original package for your distribution from

gdm needs to have root permissions to start and is usually started by
Upstart. Could you give us the output of the following command?
initctl status gdm
And could you also check if /etc/init/gdm.conf exists? If not, then try

Yes, the problem is most likely caused by gcl and not maxima.
One could try to download the CVS version of GCL and see if the problem
is fixed there. This document says that it should be fixed in their

to the Ubuntu kernel.
If you set the sysctl variable kernel.randomize_va_space to 0 or 1
(default: 2), it will install fine. Setting the variable can be done by
either editing /etc/sysctl.conf or by running the following

I ran into the same issue just yesterday. sudo started segfaulting right
after installing a few samba-related packages. I've been able to make a
backtrace (see attachment).
Commenting out the line with pam_smbpass.so in /etc/pam.d/common-auth
has fixed the problem for me.

I have not touched the nautilus configuration files at all. The upgrade
to Intrepid didn't go as smooth as I hoped, though, so something might
have gone wrong there (all I did was reinstall a few packages, which
might have been nautilus too).
