I tried it several times more, sometimes the vt-switching workaround was

I suspended my laptop to ram and resumed it several hours later.
Everything seems to be working fine, but the kernel apparently was
complaining.

Confirmed, it stays in the background here as well since aptdaemon is
being used. Many thanks :)

I'm running compiz. It seems the problem has gone away, I didn't see it
happen in a while. The authentication window now opens in foreground,
although it sometimes isn't focused when it comes up.

hal 0.5.13-1ubuntu4 in karmic still uses backlight instead of
actual_backlight. This causes gnome-power-manager to dim the display of
my notebook (Dell Latitude E6400) on first startup and then increase it
again to maximum because it thinks the brightness is zero (e.g.

Ubuntu boot screen shifts to top left of screen after login

I should note that this is indeed because of xsplash not reacting on the
resolution change.
When X starts up on my laptop with my external display connected it uses the
highest common resolution of the internal and external display in mirror mode,
which isn't the native resolution for either
The culprit here is gnome-power-manager. Although the backlight of my
laptop display is at full brightness when g-p-m starts, it uses a cached
value (brightness 0, which is wrong) and then dims it up from there to
full brightness. I connected my laptop to AC before starting up.
I captured the
Attaching verbose log of g-p-m from a user session for comparison. g-p-m
doesn't dim there and leaves the brightness as it is.

xsplash dims and undims despite power settings disabling
Hm, after more research I think I have a different bug than you. I
traced my problem back to hal using the wrong /sys-file, which would be
bug #372874.

xsplash dims and undims despite power settings disabling dimming the screen

You received this bug
This is because the change was reverted on the latest update:
compiz (1:0.8.3+git20090917-0ubuntu1) karmic; urgency=low
* New git snapshot of the 0.8 stable branch:
- fix assert failure when core is loaded twice
* debian/patches/029_default_options:
- revert 'set Unredirect
Still the case with update-manager 0.125.2 in karmic (u-m popping into
foreground when it opens a new progress window which requires no user
interaction whatsoever).
This is *extremely* annoying as it interrupts the users work, especially
because u-m normally opens in the middle of the screen

Binary package hint: gnome-panel
The run dialog (alt-f2) displays the icon for CD/DVD Creator when you
type nautilus.
This seems to be caused by the way panel-run-dialog.c matches the entered
command to a .desktop-file:
It iterates (probably alphabetically) through the
101 - 200 of 378 matches
