Public bug reported:
After upgrading to the 2.6.24-15-generic kernel in Hardy my computer
failed to boot. The progress bar would load 2 blocks and then everything
would stop.
When I tried recovery mode the same thing happened but I could see a
stack trace involving the sound chip on my saa7134
NoOp: I think you'll find that generic is the kernel you should be
running rather than 386 it might be better to remove the 386 kernel and
modules and then it should boot automatically into generic.

Yeh I fixed the problem yesterday. Turns out that installing Virtualbox
modules for 386 (instead of generic) had installed the 386 kernel and
made it the default in Grub. When I removed the 386 kernel and installed
the correct (generic) virtualbox module then my PC booted into the
generic kernel
Public bug reported:
I've just installed a fresh install of Hardy Beta. The volume control
icon displays a red error sign and when I click it I get the following
output:
No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found.
If I got to System-Preferences-Sound there are no devices listed in
Yeh I only have those 2 listed in
/lib/modules/2.6.24-12-386/kernel/sound what does that mean exactly? and
how can I fix it? do I need to wait for an update?
