Upon trying to install Ubuntu Server 8.10 (lts) as a clean install over an old version of Ubuntu Desktop 7.04, I am getting this exact issue. My drive is a WDC WD200EB, and my IDE Device is correctly identified in 7.04 as 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 IDE which seems to be a bog-standard Intel IDE chipset
