Thanks, Leann, the 'all_generic_ide' option fixes it for me. My HD still shows up as /dev/sda rather than /dev/hda (which isn't a problem in itself), but a 'cat /dev/urandom ~/test' no longer clogs up the system. I'm attaching the dmesg that I get after I've booted with 'all_generic_ide', in case
