Yes, I haven't been able to reproduce this without manually changing /etc/mysql.
But it might be worth adding a check on the result of the alternatives-command
and having it suggest purging and reinstalling mysql-common if there's a
failure?

If you don't specify the user it'll just use the username you run the

As noted you should be able to work around the bug with ALTER USER, i.e.
running:

I _think_ adding After=ntp.service would be safe (does not imply
Requires), but need to learn more about the ordering and dependency
system in systemd first.

Users might have blocked access for debian-sys-maint somehow, simply
because they don't want the maintainer scripts to have access to the
database. I don't think this is an invalid choice, so we might consider
giving a warning instead of error in the specific case of access denied.

Hi,
Installation aborts because /etc/mysql/my.cnf.fallback is missing. You
could try touching it and then retrying.

Public bug reported:

It seems this is sometimes caused by incomplete removal/purging of
previous packages and not just
Thanks for your report.
The journal just reports that MySQL failed to start, so I'm unable to
find the cause. Could you add the MySQL error log (or just any [ERROR]

Hi,
The installation aborts because it finds MariaDB data in /var/lib/mysql,
and running MySQL on a MariaDB database is not supported.
To complete installation the MariaDB data will need to be removed,
It looks like incomplete cleanup of previous mysql variant packages is
causing it to fail because /etc/mysql/my.cnf.fallback is not present.
Could you try running «touch /etc/mysql/my.cnf.fallback» then «apt-get
-f install» and see if that clears up the problem?
