I also solved this in elementary Freya by installing xserver-xorg and
thereby reverting it to the Trusty version of the intel graphics stack.
So I would say it is a problem with the Utopic xserver drivers.

On my xubuntu 12.04 system (beta 2 currently), I have a related problem.
Pressing the application button causes the menu to popup. Closing the
menu (for example with the escape key) leaves the button in a depressed
state. A second click only serves to 'unpress' the button, not bringing
the menu.

Turns out there was some muck in the CD drive - it was passed out on to
the CD eventually, and wiping it off allowed an error-free boot, but was
not initially apparent. Thanks for your help.

I thought I was affected by this bug but it was actually a different
root cause in my case.
The actual cause was my dual display setup.
When I switched to the nvidia driver from nouveau, I didn't realize that
I had even plugged in my second display. While the display was
actually powered off,
