I often lose the ability to type in my password on a locked screen
(gnome3), if the display configuration changes.
Steps to reproduce:
* plug off external display
* lock screen in gnome (ctrl-alt-l)

I experience this sometimes (currently running 16.04 LTS), you can
easily enlarge the time by:
* high load, have processes running taking 100% CPU
* a lot of used RAM
* slow I/O (hard disk)
E.g., on a netbook, I was regularly even able to type in commands on open
shells, start or close programs.
Ran into the same issue, and was stuck with apt not being able to get to
a working, clean state, see below.
I had to use aptitude (instead of apt), which gave a proper solution and
managed to deinstall, finally my solution was:
aptitude remove kde-telepathy-minimal
apt remove 'unity-*'
apt autore
I had the .iso on sda1 and copied the directory to sda2 and sda7, to be able to
install to sda1.
But, sda1 was still mounted as /isodevice, though the grub entry clearly
pointed to .iso on sda2 (or sda7). I had to rename the directory with the .iso
on sda1.

Just seem to have resolved the issue by also installing gsynaptics
(removed a few days earlier), now I am back to a fuctional touchpad in
gnome. So it may be more a gnome issue (although unity showed same
problem, freeze after login).
So this bug should be closed, I will see if problem reappears.
