I too am seeing the issue where the screen stays black but the mouse cursor
moves and changes shape normally.

Not sure why this was closed --- the behavior still exists. Often, after
launching an application from the Unity launcher, the new window fails
to take the focus. I'm guessing this is related to the window manager's
focus stealing prevention feature (which is at its default setting), but
Certain combinations of (currently focused, new) windows seem more
likely than others to exhibit this bug. For example, if the currently
focused window is a Gnome Terminal and the newly opened window is a
Nautilus (home folder) window, the Nautilus window always fails to get
the focus.

I don't see 3.4.1-0ubuntu2 in precise-proposed, but I did a build from
the source package for quantal and can also confirm that with Michael's
fix, the problem no longer reproduces. Nice!

I first thought this was a pure duplicate of bug 979756, but I realize
the Badly visible text and icons when dash is open part of this report
is likely a separate issue.
