The same here with Lenovo R61 on i965.
Nothing helps. The only message is *ERROR* invalid framebuffer id.
Upgrading kernel to this http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v2.6.33-rc8/ - doesn't help either =(

I had Ubuntu 9.04 installed, after dist-upgrade to 9.10 amd64.
Use new kernel (2.6.30-020630rc3-generic)
rmmod i915
sudo modprobe i915 modeset=1
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
After than login screen appeares corrupted. Pressing Ctrl+F1 and typing
init 6 is the only way...
