Happens to me with gvim+compiz+nvidia as well.
Fixes mentioned in duplicate like changing font rendering does not help.

When opening dolphin or trying to use the open/save file option in kde
apps (kate, ksnapshot etc.) while in gnome, the app hangs for about
30-60s before opening dolphin/the dialog. This does not occur with gnome
apps.

I guess this bug can be closed. The HD eventually failed, and may very well a
hardware issue and not an ubuntu issue (or, at least, i don't have any proof
that it is an ubuntu/kernel issue).

I did a clean install of hardy on a brnad new sata drive about 3 months ago.
about two weeks ago i experienced a major slowdown and cpu hangs, and when
rebooting, numerous fsck errors on both my home partition and the root one.
In addition, read speed is really slow,
attaching dmesg|grep ata
let me know if any other information is needed.

I can confirm that I've installed through the LiveCD, and it also did
not detect XP installed (no chainloader entry for xp in menu.lst).
