I Googled my way here too and I want to add that with kernel 2.6.38, the
minimal supported version is 3.1.4 build-385536. Older versions can be
installed but fail to compile the kernel modules. On 2.6.32, the minimal
version that should work is 3.0.1.

Upon investigating this a bit further, it seems the issue has to do with
the sort column and in particular the package in main/supported/logo
column. When sorting with this column, synaptic behaves excruciatingly

Thank you for your insights. I did aptitude full-upgrade and was indeed
annoyed by hung apt/dpkg processes running without a terminal attached.
Also, there were whiptail processes stuck in an endless loop.
Unfortunately, the entire system kind of crashed (only ping from outside
worked)

Assuming you've changed the resolution in startupmanager, edit the file
/etc/default/grub as root $(sudo gedit /etc/default/grub) and look for a
line that says vga=xyz, e.g.:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX= splash vga=795
Then remove the vga argument (so it's just splash in this example) and
save. Now run

situation, however, I'm not running Windows at all but I use Samba both
to share files with and to connect

But the upstart job is never disabled, so upstart keeps trying to run
munin-node even though it's not installed. This causes an error in the
post-installation script when it's

Here's what I did (worked for me):
First, I installed the package startupmanager (like so: sudo aptitude
install startupmanager). It should appear in the Gnome menu under System
Administration StartUp-Manager. From there, select a resolution and
set colour depth to 24 bits. Enable Show boot
