Laptop is set to suspend when the lid is closed.
When using the gnome-shell menu and clicking on suspend nothing happens

An update
Mine is now using Nvidia'a 319.49 driver and suspends and resumes normally if I
actually select suspend form the menu.
If I just close the lid it suspends but resumes to a grey screen or sometimes
to a completely unusable desktop. Nothing is clickable but the pointer can be
moved.

My hardware is a recently bought brand new MacBook Pro 10,1 with 2.3GHz and 8GB
ram.
System will suspend but on resume will sometimes boot to a desktop but is
completely unresponsive. Most of the time, however, it just remains at a black
screen and must be force shutdown and rebooted to gain
oops forgot to mention I am using Ubuntu 13-04 with the latest kernel.

The only way I can type normally is to hold down the Fn key whilst typing.
Have tried all normal ways to turn off num lk, with no effect.
This is on a Sony Vaio laptop.

My oneiric install has now been upgraded to precise so presumably my logs won't
help. In fact /var/log/jockey.log is empty.
I could install oneiric again and then post the outputs you request if you
think that might help.

Ok, re-installed OO again and the Nvidia 173 driver was installed again.

Thanks for all the info Bryce, and the extra bugs. The problem seems to
have gone largely un-noticed previously, possibly because most people
don't check that box during installation? I know I don't usually.

Yes, at the time I was doing a fresh install of 11-10 which was to be upgraded
to 12-04 for testing.
I checked the box for the 3rd party drivers and after installation and
rebooting I found that the 173 driver had been installed rather than the
nvidia-current driver, which is the correct driver

I too have the above symptoms in unity.
However, in gnome-shell the system loads fine but when the pointer is moved to
top left to get the Applications menu, the desktop crashes and defaults to
fallback.
