Yes I know what you mean about using the format table dialog, but it is substantially more difficult than simply snapping the alignment arrows (sorry, I dont know their proper name) on the ruler. If you have a look as MS office or Abiword, they implement this and its very useful (one of those

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: openoffice.org By default, the grey alignment arrows on the ruler do not snap to their next position: instead, they have complete freedom of movement. This makes it near-on impossible to ensure that seperated tables in the same document, are correctly
