In 1.5.21-6.4ubuntu2.1, if you edit debian/rules, and change HCACHE_DB to from tokyocabinet to anything else (be that bdb, gdbm or qdbm), rebuild the package and install the new package, the crash goes away. This is almost certainly a bug in libtokyocabinet. Note that I also had to add
