Progress bar doesn't work in nautilus for
I did some more digging and realised that this was due to a
misconfigured BIOS - I'd been too aggressive in disabling hardware to
save power. Once I restored it to the default setting, suspend/resume
works fine - from the pm_trace logs I suspect the issue was that I'd
disabled the serial port.
This seems to be a Compiz problem but can not provide more information.

metRo_, not in Ubuntu/Unity. A nasty workaround for Xubuntu is to
remove the indicator-application package. That will at least allow the
tray icon to appear, but if anything else uses that package, you will
lose that as well. For example, the volume indicator.

Over 2 yrs later and this bug is still present in precise 12.04.3 LTS??
WTF. MarcS's workaround of changing from symbolic uid and gid to numeric
worked for me as well.

On a related point, I've found that I can open the templates for editing
on the command-line using the '-o' option; however the issue with being
unable to do so graphically (via the Template Manager) still persists.

I found a kludgy workaround, which I'll attach here as a patch. I just
commented out the lines where wicd-daemon.py tries to backup
resolv.conf. This fixes the dbus errors and lets wicd startup normally.
