Well as no fix is forthcoming I decided that most pragmatic thing to do
was uninstall Chromium and just installed Google Chrome from the Google
website.
Not an open source solution but I just needed a solution that works.

Thank you for the help. I tried the legacy fglrx driver through the PPA
route you posted. It the driver loads but crashes more unity and
cinnamon.
I guess I need to wait until either the next release or maybe AMD will
update it's legacy drivers soon. It's been 6 months so here's hoping
it's soon.
I'm an end user that is affected by this on my HD 4570 :(
At the moment I'm running in SOFTWARE mode because this open source
driver doesn't work for me, and ATI's binary legacy driver is
incompatible with the version of Xorg in ubuntu stable.
What can I do to help sort this out?

VLC stutters when listening to MP3
I'm affected by this bug. I will play an mp3 or video file in VLC and it
will often stutter very briefly just after starting and occasionally
mid-playback further on.
Does anyone have any ideas about how to debug this one?

I also find that the settings do not persist between reboot.
The easy way for me to tell this is to:
1.) Set force v-sync on;
2.) Reboot
3.) Wobble a window (compiz..) and observe the tear;
4.) Load the Catalyst settings menu (admin version);
5.) Set v-sync off, click apply, then force
My view is that in terms of usability, this is very poor.
People who game in windows expect their keys on their keyboard to work
all the time, not just inside specific use-cases.
What are our options for a solution?

I can confirm that in 10.10 that suspending and resuming is enough for
this package to forget to continue disabling my trackpad.
