I became curious and found .kde/share/config/startupconfig with this
line in it:
krandrrc_display_startupcommands='xrandr --output default --pos 0x0
--mode 1152x864 --refresh 55
I commented the line out amd logged back in - the line was restored!
I changed it according to my needs and this made
My guess was xserver because xorg.conf was ignored. But you're right. I just
created a new user and logged in - everything was fine. So I'll delete my
.kde4/ and make all my settings anew - but probably not today because I had a
hard day at work and am a bit lazy now ;-)
Thanks for the hint and
Public bug reported:
Today I bought a new monitor. I had the resolution of 1024x768 on my old one,
now I want 1440x900.
I used system settings to set the new resolution, but after re-login I see
1024x768.
I used nvidia-settings to set the new resolution, but after re-login I see
1024x768.

Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system

I tried that notransparency workaround, but my system still crashed. So
I had to switch off the effects. I do hope that Nvidia will be able to
fix this soon. Indeed they, as Bob Tanner pointed out, provided good
support for Linux.

I surely hope nvidia will fix this! It happened to me, too. And I can replicate
the bug (but I have switched off Desktop effects, so I won't be able to
replicate it^^
It happened to me on maximising komsole.
My configuration is:
nvidia-current 270.41.06-0ubuntu1
xserver-xorg 1:7.6+4ubuntu3
And back again. I was able to reproduce the error, but it didn't reboot,
it just said that this was a fatal error, and the installation was
terminated, but _not_ the Kubuntu live-CD. So maybe it's best to close
this thread...

Grub-install crashed at hdb5
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/146278
I'm going to try the installation again. I already downloaded and burned
the Gutsy Beta. In about 5 hours (sorry, it's not possible earlier),
I'll try to install it and thus try to reproduce the error. I will
report here afterwards.

Grub-install crashed at hdb5
So, here I'm back again. I totally failed to reproduce the error by giving the
right partition. I can't boot it right now, but that's more of a grub-problem
(or maybe just my personal problem). I'll repartition a bit, and then we'll see.
It's getting close to midnight, and I'll try again

Binary package hint: grub
I tried to install the new Kubuntu Gutsy Gibbon, but I didn't want to
touch my regular Feisty, so I created a new partition at hdb5. All went
well until the installer wanted to install grub on hdb5. A critical
error occured, and the system rebooted!
Sorry for the delay, now everything works fine again. I know that it
isnt't supported, I just wanted to test if it was a fault of restricted-
manager. But they both did the same. And yes, I meant that prg.

Yes, now everything runs normal again. I reinstalled Kubuntu twice in that
process, but that's no problem. By now I figured out what went wrong: I used
restricted-manager to install the proprietary drivers for my card (GeForce2
MX/MX 400), and the program (as automatix, which I tested to get a
This may have been false alert! A lot of things didn't work on my PC, and I
found out that the wrong nvidia-drivers were installed.

[apport] gnome-osd-event-bridge crashed with SIGSEGV in strcmp()
Stop everything - I just found out the reason why my screensaver doesn't work
ist that 3D in general doesn't work on my PC, although the NVIDIA-drivers ARE
installed.
But the good news is that the non-3D-programs (firefox, akregator, konsole
etc.) work. So I'll read some news and go to bed for
I traced the problem down to the NVIDIA driver. Sorry for the alert, but
I was really annoyed.

When I start konsole, KDEInit tells me it couldn't start konsole. Firefox,
Synaptic, Adept, Amarok etc. won't start either. I even reinstalled my kubuntu,
but the problems still remain. It started with the forelast update which
included ktorrent and two metacity-packages.
