Yes, I get crashes with compositing on. I cannot say if turning compositing off
helps, as:
- System Settings - LookFeel - Display Effects only allows to temporarily
suspend compositing, not disable it completely
- I get kwin crashes upon startup - when compositing is always reenabled

I fail to see a reason why this should be actually needed.
If you don't want to have a menu entry for memtest86, why do you have
then the package installed?
1) Updater for GRUB1 configuration had such feature and I was using it;
