I have what I think might be the same problem on a new installation of
Lucid (which I chose for LTS reasons).
After install, my AR8152 v1.1 wasn't available through NetworkManager.
After some investigation, I installed linux-backports-modules-wireless-
lucid-preempt to try to get a working atl1c
It is very unlikely that a security update of a stable release will remove an
already installed package.
I'm not convinced by this assertion. See how many times kernel updates are
mentioned in this bug report and in duplicates #347377, #374861, and #395022.

couple of days, even though I upgraded from Intrepid in April.

fix. It won't impress anyone I try to recommend Kubuntu to. I realize
it's not your fault; I'm just getting frustrated that no-one seems to be
taking responsibility for bugs like this and bug #24234, for example.

Thanks Derek. I might try cdrtools when I have some spare time.
In case anyone with any authority is still watching this thread: I'm
brave enough to compile from source if I need to, but this is still a
workaround, not a fix. How can I credibly recommend Kubuntu to anyone
else, when there are
hpp3's suggested change to /etc/security/limits.conf didn't work for me.
My attached fail log mentions burnfree. K3B consistently gets 43MB
through burning the Kubuntu Jaunty desktop i386 image. I'm getting bored
of making coasters out of someone else's blank CDs.
