confirm fix with on lucid
$ sudo aptitude install usb-modeswitch usb-modeswitch-data
but on karmic, works perfect without usb-modeswitch

i had the same issue .. so can't remember the fix actually ... but could
u try to change ur boot process,
so, change /etc/default/grub to:
-start-
GRUB_DEFAULT=0
#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2
NOT All linux-backports-modules-* must be removed to provide work.
Just, linux-backports-modules-$(uname -r)
I use linux-backports-modules-alsa .. for audio digging =)

so, i had the same issue ... after some analyze, i decided to remove package
'libnss-mdns'.
after that file /etc/nsswitch.conf will be update automatically to
hosts: files dns
well, everything works perfect now.
using karmic.
