We have lived with this bug for some time, across two previous LTS releases
No we not. Ubuntu 8.04 (previous LTS) doesn't has this bug. It seems that bug
appear only in Jaunty (i will check it in Intrepid).
Colin, please, stop leaving comments about how you don't want to know

Note that this bug is still reproduces in Lucid Alpha3. It is very critical bug
for LTS because it makes all packages in system inconsistent and it can't be
fixed after release.

There are some messages about ntpd and it seems that all OK with it.

that may well be due to acpid and the kernel handling those keys. Could you
try stopping acpid and then testing the buttons.
With these steps:
1. sudo modprobe panasonic_laptop
2. sudo /etc/init.d/acpid stop
There is also double handling of FN+ keys.

I just loaded my notebook from Ubuntu 9.10 beta live CD and checked all
FN keys, everything works out of the box, but there is one problem with
mute FN key, it is doublepressed and sound remains unmuted, but if I
press this button very quickly, then it pressed 1 time, so it is
different problem
So if the module is loaded, there should be an input device listed by
lsinput...
There is no such device in lsinput output. See attached lsinput.txt.
When using input-event device, this should at least generate output for the
working keys.
Does something show up for the non-working too?

The main reason to update Java on Hardy is that bug 6429775
(http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6429775) is really fixed in
it. In all other (earler) versions it is impossible to use Java with Compiz
enabled.
