Ok Wolfgang - I tried that SRU kernel and yes it works fine in it. I

Thanks for the prompt reply.
I installed the 2011-04-19-natty i386 kernel in the link you gave.
Rebooted, turned wireless back on in the BIOS and hooray it works!
Here is my lspci with the wireless activated:
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation N10 Family DMI Bridge
00:02.0 VGA compatible
I can't do this because the results will be wrong while it is turned off
in the bios.
If I turn it on in the bios it will just crash upon getting to the
desktop.
However this page seems to have all the info for this model:
I didn't have this problem with 10.10 but I have it with 11.04 with all
the latest updates.

I can confirm this problem.
After changing to opendns - this is the one major problem I have come
across.
The problem could be fixed at the opendns end, but it would be nice to
have a firefox workaround...
I've become very dependent on the awesome bar.

I agree this issue is of high importance.
On my desktop I've changed to an atheros based card to work around it
It is not just ubuntus fault, the rt2x00 project is light on developers
right now and it's unfortunate that as they have been merged into the
mainline tree they have had so many
i've been playing around with hardy proposed and hardy backports
modules.
i've noticed that there are two different versions of the module (at
least).
using modinfo rt2500pci there seems to be a 2.0.10 version and a 2.1.5
version
the 2.0.10 version seems to work better for me.
I think 2.1.5 is
Some short comments:
- This is definitely a regression. In Gutsy (even Feisty!) there was a
reliable version of the driver. In Hardy there is a crappier version
related to the code that was merged into the main linux tree. I quote
from the front page rtx00 upstream web site:
rt2x00 enters
my second dot point I should have said gutsy instead of hardy.
My point is gutsy had a better rt2500pci than hardy, all because of the
chronological accident of hardy locking in on a kernel version that had
a temporarily bad merge of the rt2x00 tree.

this solution is good
for most users they will have no other mysql applications and have no
root password set, it will just work.
for more advanced users they will have a root password and will have to
figure it out what it is
this solution rewards the most common use case and puts the burden
well the problem is that mysql has its own little world of usernames and
passwords and privileges
there are security issues if applications can get mysql root access to
easily
but i agree it is a bug and needs to be solved somehow, even if we
simply provide instructions on how to set a mysql
yes that is how I did it also
the problem is if they are already using applications with mysql, they
probably already have a root password set
but possibly it could assume there is no root password, set it, and then
if that fails ask the user for the root password
mysql permissions are
I hit this exact same problem. Today. Jan 6th 2006.
It seems you need to have mysql-server preinstalled and preconfigured
and already know what your root password is.

I believe the problem was in my .asoundrc
I deleted my .asoundrc and then reconfigured alsa and it works
This is NOT because my .asoundrc was wrong in dapper.
It is just that the alsa hda-intel drivers are changing rapidly between
versions of alsa.
So I think what happened is what alsa put in
I had a similar problem with my HP LJ 2300 when I upgraded from dapper

I wonder if there is a problem with cups trying to use the hp specific
drivers, rather than the generic usb/post script stuff.
My printer wasn't working when it had the hp:/ URI, but
